Rio Rancho, NM asked in Bankruptcy for New Mexico

Q: I have no idea how or where to start the bankruptcy process. What are the first steps I need to take?

I am buried in debt and I have no idea what to do next. I know I am also losing my job and soon will not be able to even afford rent.

A: Put together a list of all of your debts, all of your assets, 6 months of your income from all sources and do a monthly budget of your normal living expenses. Also, any lawsuits you are involved with. See a bankruptcy lawyer in your area and they will be able to review your situation and see if bankruptcy is a good option for you. Hope it works out. Good luck.

A: The answer below is correct. I would add that you should have the last three years of filed taxes with you. I would print out a credit report and bring that, and gather any and all bills. I mean every single bill you have, including your normal monthly bills. If you are married, and going alone to the lawyer, make sure you bring your spouses 6 month paystubs. All income for the Means Test is computed on a household basis. Good Luck

A: Please call a bankruptcy attorney right away. Most bankruptcy attorneys provide a free initial consultation and if you can prepared to give a summary of your financial situation they will be able to counsel you how to proceed.
