Q: After my child turns 18, Do I have to keep paying for his health care
I been paying for his healthcare due to paying child support
A:
Hello and thanks for asking your question. I am going to try my best to answer you as completely as possible, here, with the information that you have given me. Please know, however, that an attorney in a consult would have many more questions for you in order that you would receive the most accurate advice. For example, you indicate that you have been paying for your son's healthcare due to paying child support. Do you mean that you have him included on your employer's insurance (or your ex's employer's insurance) and you are sharing the costs of any unreimbursed medical expenses as per the guidelines? Of course, do not give too much personal information here on this public space, but as you can see, a little more information is definitely needed to give you a really thorough answer.
I would, however, advise you to not make any changes to any insurance policies until after you have had the chance to have a consult with an attorney. If your child is not emancipated at age 18 (meaning he still needs the financial support of both parents) then the insurance would likely need to continue. I can say that child support in general now automatically ends at age 19 unless the child is in school full time, disabled or in foster care.
Strongly consider talking with an experienced family law attorney in your area so you can be sure that you are not going against a court order or NJ law with regard to stopping any medical coverage for your son. Many offer free consults as we do. Hoping this was helpful to you! Regards, Bari
