Port Murray, NJ asked in Bankruptcy for New Jersey

Q: Can you help someone get out of debt who has no money?

My friend has 15K in debt due to her ex boyfriend putting his court fees on her credit card. He does not provide child support there is no court agreement. He does not pay taxes to the IRS though he is a legal citizen of the US he works under the table. He refuses to help her. She can't live on her own and she can't pay off the credit card. She owns a car and that is in her name but that is all she has. She has no savings she makes $400 a month and has to pay $350 in her credit card payment on a variable interest rate. She does not qualify for a personal loan due to debt to income ratio. She refuses to go to court as she is afraid of losing her child because she doesn't have a place to live. I do not know how to help her any further. Please help.

A: One, she should contact legal aid. Two, she cannot lose her child for being homeless. Child support will be enforced. There is other aid she can get. Bankruptcy is the least of the issues. Contact her county department of social services to learn about benefits available.
