Q: I was given a ticket with only a court date set two months from now.. How do I respond?
I was just given a ticket for moving around two cars to make a left turn. I had to go across the double yellow line to do so. There was no on coming traffic at all since there was a red light about 50 yards down the road. The officer kept saying I moved 50 to 100 yards down the wrong way. I kept saying I don't think it was even 50. I looked it up, an average car length is 5m. So I moved 10m at most.
What are my first steps?
A: Hire an attorney who can handle it, so you don't have to do it yourself. Otherwise, get the officer's copy of the ticket, so you can get the officer's statement. Then, go to where you got the ticket and take pictures of the scene. You could make a drawing/video/graphic related to the events based on the testimony you intend to offer.
A: I would fight that if I were you. It also doesn't hurt (from my experience doing this) to get a lawyer to represent you, the court's usually appreciate that and a decent lawyer can look at facial defects on a ticket, cross-examine the police officer, ask you good questions or give you good advising beforehand. I'd be happy to assist if you want to email me.
A:
If you want to fight the ticket you need to plead not guilty.
Without knowing more about what ticket you received its difficult to have a conversation about a defense.
