Q: Registration expired, I am within the 15 day grace period, but can I still get a ticket for expired *inspection*?
My check engine light was on, I thought it was because of a transmission leak. I got the leak fixed then took it to AutoZone to clear the check engine light. They told me the light was on because the second O2 sensor has gone bad, the more expensive one. So I never took it to an inspection place since typically they won't even hook it up if the check engine light is already on. Now I have to raise money for the part, plus the money for the inspection, plus money for the registration (including the late fee). I'm looking at roughly $250.
The last day to get it inspected was October 31st. I will try to raise the money during the coming week (Oct. 6th - 9th since the 10th is a holiday), so my grace period is from Nov. 1st through Nov. 15th. The thing is, I can't find anywhere that mentions anything about the inspection having a grace period. If I drive during that period, I won't/shouldn't get ticketed for expired registration but I'm scared they'll ticket me for inspection.
A: They may give you a ticket for expired/no inspection, but if you are able to get the car compliant by the court date, the State will dismiss the charge. If you need more time, you can ask the State for a continuance at the next court date, which you'll likely be granted.
