Q: I want Joint Custody i don't want full custody of my kids

I want joint custody of my kids with there dad i have been the primary custodian for my kids because there dad has been in and out of prison and we had court today for visitation just wanted to know if i have legal rights to them and still custody because her thinks he got full custody of both my kids ages 4 and 8 and a half until he gets out they live with me and i have custody and primary residence but he's saying when he gets out he can take my kids and everything because i gave up to having a lawyer and going to trial i just need help please let me know what i can do
