Q: Letter explaining why I did not file my taxes

I sponsored my spouse for immigrant visa and because I had no income and never filed income taxes I got help of a joint sponsor who qualify for sponsorship. My spouse appeared at Consulate for interview. Everything was fine in the interview, but they declined at the end giving notice of section 221(g) and said that I must submit an explanation as to why I did not file my taxes although my spouse showed them confirmation of non filing of income tax by IRS for past four years. Now I am going to submit the following explanation:I never filed my taxed till 2016 because I did not have any income during those years and was not required to file my taxes. Is above explanation is fine ? Please advise.

A: This would be a good time to work with an immigration attorney. The attorney will need to see the complete filing and the notice your wife received and respond accordingly. I would advise to include a bit more explanation than a couple lines -perhaps referencing the appropriate rules and regulations. Hope this helps a bit.
