Louisville, KY asked in Criminal Law and Domestic Violence for Kentucky

Q: I was sexually abused as a child by my own father. I am now 23. What can I do?

I have fought with the internal turmoil of the sexual abuse I faced as a young child for 12 years. I was 11 when he did it, and there were three incidents of it. My mother didn't know about it, and the only friend I told passed away earlier this year. In light of this #MeToo movement, I have decided to no longer keep this a secret. It's painful, scary and not something I want to drudge back up, but I feel it is my duty to do so so he can never do this again. My parents have since divorced and even in the divorce trial he villianized me, which the judge allowed, because I had taken some of my own furniture from the home when my mother and I left. He is now gettig remarried to a woman who has small children, and I fear for them terribly. Can someone please advise me on what to do? I have heard both criminal and civil charges can be brought, and the things he did to me classify as a felony from what I have read. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you

A: You should find the Crimes against Children Unit in the town where it occurred and report both the offenses against you and your fears for the upcoming potential victims. There is no Astaire of limitations on felonies in Kentucky, so you may still be able to prosecute after all this time.
