A: The ticket will say the number of days in which you must respond. Often, just calling the court is enough to satisfy that particular deadline. You can ask for an Informal Hearing or a Formal Hearing. In some circumstances, it is ok to have an Informal Hearing, which is done without attorneys on either side, and is just you, the officer, and either a judge or a magistrate. If you are not happy with the result, you can appeal, pay an Appeal Bond, and have a Formal Hearing, where attorneys can be involved. But the risk is that sometimes the position that the officer takes about negotiating the charge to a lower offense becomes harsher because the officer has to deal with the same ticket twice. You can also hire an attorney, give the attorney the authority to negotiate on your behalf, and you won't have to go to court yourself at all. Sincerely, Frank B. Ford
