Q: where do I start with my invention idea

A: My suggestion is that you start out by looking to see how close the prior art is to your invention. A good place to start looking for relevant prior art is to check the US patents and published applications. Here is a link to a slide set to get you started. http://bit.ly/Patent_Searching

Becoming familiar with what is in a patent application will make you a better informed consumer when it comes time to get someone to write patent applications for you. It is an expensive process so you want to make good decisions.
