Q: I am purchasing a home "as is" Would like to get a home inspection done so I know if I need to repair anything. Can I?

The home is an estate sale. A lawyer is handling the deal.

A: You should definitely get one. An appraisal will be necessary for any mortgage. Start with looking at the tax assessment history, but unless you are getting the whole package for more than the ground itself is worth, any problems will reduce your profit investment so you need to protect yourself. (If it's a family home, you know the history that's different--unless you moved away and aren't too familiar what's been going on in the past. Even then you may not be too aware of the condition of things, so you need to know what repairs you are getting into.
