Q: I have joint custody for my son and i have provided him all the expenses. do i still have to split the child tax credit?
my ex-husband has not been providing anything for my son for the past two years and have changing jobs with no stable income to provide for my son. my son have been living with me all fours years of high school. I have been providing all the living expenses and my divorce paper stated that we both split the child tax every other year. How can i change it since my son will be 18 this year 2018, which will be my year to claim him in 2018. I want to change it for me to have the full custody of claiming him until he gets out of college or as long he reached the age based on the law. i have spoken to my ex about claiming my son for 2017 and he stated no because he needed even though he did not share the equal agreement on the divorce paper.
