Palmdale, CA asked in Animal / Dog Law for California

Q: This dog sitter I hired neglected my small dog by leaving him alone all night unattended w/ 2 large dogs who killed him

His injuries were found the morning after - the dog sitter (through Rover.com) was saying the attack “must have happened during the night” and neglected to bring my small dog to the vet in the morning. Due to severe brain swelling from multiple large dog bites my dog succumbed to his injuries last night. What do I do now? I need justice for my dog. My entire family and relatives are heartbroken over this senseless loss. My dogs and most especially small dogs should never be left alone unattended with large dogs they don’t even know. Pls advice.

A: You have a claim against the dog sitter for negligence and/or breach of contract. The value of your claim is the cost of any veterinary bills and the fair market value of your dog. You might also notify Rover.com of the incident and it may take away hosting rights from the family.
