Q: my grandsons mother is facing prison time and we can not locate the father the mother will not sign guardianship to me
he wants to get into school but they will not let me register him hes 16 yrs old what can i do
A: Instead of a guardianship, you might ask the mother to sign a child care power of attorney. This is good for six months and will allow you to register your grandchild in school and assist with other matters as needed. If this does not work, you could apply to the court to be appointed his guardian and serve notice upon the mother as well as the father if he can be located. At age 16, this young person might, under the circumstances, also apply to the court to be emancipated.
