Inman, SC asked in Civil Litigation and Gov & Administrative Law for New Jersey

Q: Can a law firm change your lawyer on you without notice and proceed charge you the time it takes to review your case?

I have a case that had been ongoing for almost a year. I had not heard anything the past few months, and then suddenly I am served a notice of a hearing. I get in contact with my lawyer to find out a new lawyer has taken my case and was assured they are up to speed on my case, but then proceeded to charge me the time it took to become up to date and seek answers and information that they already had on file from the previous lawyer. I have had to resend documents previously send and was charged for each correspondence.

A: In general they cannot charge you twice for the same thing, BUT you need to read your retainer agreement.
