Richmond Hill, NY asked in Traffic Tickets for New York

Q: I got 2 traffic tickets in Alpine,New Jersey and I have a New York State drivers license will I get points?

Or will it just be a fine? I was going 97 in a 50 and I got one for being in the left passing lane. I’m only 18 I’m broke and I can’t afford a good lawyer so I just wanted to know how bad this is for me. This is also my very first any kind of traffic ticket/speeding

A: Well, yes, you have a problem. First, I'm not sure how points are assessed in NJ, but in NY, 47-mph over the limit is an 11-point violation (which gets you the jackpot: automatic suspension of your driving privileges (the traveling in the wrong lane will add points, also). Second: NY and NJ share ticket information so a NJ conviction or plea with points WILL show-up on your NY record. Finally, I'd strongly recommend you hire counsel in NJ -- you do not want to mess around with this. Bonus recommendations: Take a driver safety course; and, learn to drive responsibly (e.g., learn to obey the rules of the road -- if not for your own sake, then for the sake of others.

A: If your license is from NY and all your tickets are in NJ, you should talk to NJ attorneys.

As long as you do not get suspended in NJ, these points will not affect you here in NY.
