Denham Springs, LA asked in Animal / Dog Law for Louisiana

Q: I took my dad's dog and now he's trying to press criminal charges can he?

The dog was dying of neglect and abuse on his property. It was severely emaciated, and beat up. I took the dog without his permission and put it under my care, taking it to the vet, getting him his shots, etc etc. My father has no papers on this dog and no way to prove ownership. Other than pictures of him. And, even the pictures that he has doesn't even look like this dog anymore. Can he possibly press charges on me for dogs theft because he thinks the dog that I have now is his? It's a Great Pyrenees and he looks like a generic male Great Pyrenees. There are absolutely no defining features on him. My dad filled out a police report of a missing white dog. He has no papers on him and never took him to the vet. Is there any way he can prove ownership and sue me for dog theft?

A: Do you have any proof of what bad condition the dog was in?
