New Orleans, LA asked in Animal / Dog Law for Louisiana

Q: Dog got loose, killed an rabbit in a cage. But did not break into their enclosed backyard, was put back there unattended

We plan on buying them a new rabbit and cage, but the dog wasn't in there yard originally. The neighbors who found him originally asked because the didn't have a yard to house him in and they said yes, he can stay in our backyard. So legally what should we be prepared for? Rabbit was enclosed so he did break into the cage, but he was put back there without any thought to the rabbit. The cops were called and I'm sure animal control to but just need to know if we are still liable.

A: Unfortunately pets are just worth a dollar amount in Louisiana. So you are only liable for property loss.

A: You would only be liable for the cost of the rabbit and for any damage to the cage. They wouldn't be entitled to any other damages, such as stress, anxiety, etc.
