Madisonville, KY asked in Contracts for Kentucky

Q: my wife and I had an agreement with a lady to live in and work on a house, rent free. She evicted us, and is now suing.

The 'rent', was agreed to be in the form of our labor in working on the house, as well as paying for some materials. She has since served us with an eviction notice. This was a verbal only contract. The lady that evicted us has decided to sue us for $2500.00. What can we do?

A: Hire a local civil lawyer ho handles civil litigation. Generally, agreements involving real estate are enforceable only if in writing. So, you may not be able to collect for your work but conversely, she likely can not recover her”rent” if everything was verbal.
