Indianapolis, IN asked in Criminal Law for Indiana

Q: I was charged with shoplifting at target. I totally disagree with this charge. Should I go to court with an attorney?

I was walking out of target and completely forget I had items underneath my cart. I tried to tell target I wasn't trying to steal these items and offered to pay but they refused to take my money! I even showed them I had $160 on me right then. The target security guard just kept saying I'm just doing my job. Please advise how I should proceed. Also, a week later I get a letter from targets attorney demanding I pay $100 civil fees...totally confused by this!

A: Yes, you should at least consult with an attorney to see what can be done to keep this off your record. Also you will want to have your attorney request the Target surveillance video, however, generally video gets written over in 30-60 days so you should get on this now.
