A: In order to become a naturalized citizen, the applicant must prove that he or she is a person of “good moral character,” especially in the five years before applying.

If the applicant has a DUI on their record, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will most likely deny the application because they believe the applicant not a person of good moral character.

This goes double for the second DUI.

While a DUI should not affect the naturalization process, a second DUI would jeopardize a person’s permanent resident status, especially if it’s a drug-related or felony DUI.
