Q: I own a small business, if I get a divorce do I have to pay alimony. We been married for six years.
She has her own income coming in. I pay ALL of the household bills, Including the house note .She won’t pay anything or buy anything. We don’t have kids. And the house is not paid for yet. What advice can you give me. I will walk away from the house and all the contents if she agrees to finish paying for the house.
A: I can't give you specific advice because I don't represent you. However, know that the law on alimony has changed. ALimony as a way for you to pay her and even up the property settlement is still a possibility. If the property settlement is about even, then alimony is just not likely. Periodic alimony is still allowed, but only in special circumstances. If she can earn a living, she is not likely to get alimony.
