Minneapolis, MN asked in Child Support for Nebraska

Q: I discovered that I may have a child that is now 25 years old. Can the mother file for back child support?

I had not been informed that the child was born. The child has lived in Nebraska for it's entire life.

A: Child support is for support of a child. Once the child is an adult, it would be difficult to successfully argue that a retroactive award of child support for an adult is appropriate. I have never heard of a case where a party was successful in arguing for retroactive child support for an adult in Nebraska.
