Q: My employer has worked me at salary pay for 45 hours a week. Yet he works me 6 days a week from 630 am to 330.

I wanted to know if it's ok to not approve me for vacation time while also threatening to fire me. I'm the kitchen manager at kekes breakfast cafe. He works me like a dog yet I get teated like crap. I need this job but they are threatening me if I dnt show up even tho my vacation days were approved.

A: Unfortunately, you are pretty much at the employer's mercy; why? Because Florida is an “at will” state, which means employers are free to hire, transfer, promote, demote, suspend, reinstate, fire and rehire employees for any reason at any time, i.e., “at will.” The only thing employers cannot do is make any of these employment decisions based upon an employee’s race, age, gender, disability, religion, marital status or national origin.

FYI: Many greedy employers often use "salaried" employees to avoid paying overtime to wage-earners. If that is what is happening here to you, you might want to contact the federal Department of Labor through their informative website. It will explain all your rights and provide you with guidance too.
