A: The maximum penalty for a Class A Misdemeanor is one year in county jail and a fine up to $4,000.

If you are convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence then you permanently lose your 2nd Amendment rights to possess any firearm or ammunition and if you are not a US citizen you become a deportable alien, even if you have permanent residence status. Also, any future misdemeanor family violence can be prosecuted as a felony punishable by up to 10 years in the state penitentiary and a fine up to $10,000.

Life is hard enough without a conviction for a violent crime weighing you down. Hire the best criminal defense attorney available to maximize your chances of resolving the case without a conviction. If you can't afford a good attorney, swallow your pride and ask your family for help with the legal fees. As a parent, I would want my sons to ask me... because I care about their future and also the futures of any potential grandchildren I might one day have.
