Colorado Springs, CO asked in Animal / Dog Law for Colorado

Q: Can animal control get a warrant for my puppy even if it’s not my home?

My 7mo old puppy had a bone fracture a few weeks ago, the emergency vet recommended surgery and called animal control to make sure it was done so basically I have a case open to verify that she’s getting vet care for her leg which she is, I’ve gotten a second and third opinion from orthopedic vets and they’re saying it’s a 50/50 chance that’ll it’ll heal w/o surgery so I’m holding off since it’ll be over 3000 and put me in serious debt, I told the officer I’ll have it done soon and even let him inside the home (which I don’t own) so he could see I take great care of her and am giving her daily herbs and supplements that support joint fractures in dogs and he even thanked me but said the case will be open until she has surgery or the leg gets amputated, I’ve since been ignoring him and am planning on moving soon but I’m wondering if I don’t answer the door will he eventually get a warrant for my pup even though it’s not my home? I’m just so scared to lose her

A: It would be best to save up the money and the dog the surgery she needs because otherwise she could have long term health problems. If you have a financial hardship, call around to different vets and see who will work with you. Yes, animal control can seize your dog if you don’t get the surgery because I am assuming your open case is for animal cruelty/neglect. It would not be in your dog’s best interest to not provide proper medical care for her.
