Q: What to do when I'm not receiving alimony

My lawyer died, I have no representation right now and I can't get a new lawyer until I can obtain my file from the firm. He was a sole practitioner so waiting to see who is taking over. Due to my lawyer passing away my future ex husband has decided to not pay his alimony and I'm unsure of what I can do . Can I contact his attorney myself ?

A: You may contact the other attorney based upon the circumstances however, it is much wiser to retain new counsel. You can speed up the process by going to the county clerk and making copies of any papers that were filed in court. Additionally, a new attorney should be able to contact the attorney that is appointed by the court to deal with your deceased attorney's files and get the full file that way.
