Q: will the state of California recognize a German notarization?

I am requesting a birth certificate from the county of Fresno, California but they require an authorization form which needs to be notarized. I am currently living in Munich, Germany. I have already made an appointment with the us consulate here but find their fee's for notarization to be exorbitant. If I receive notarization from a German Notary will it be recognized by the state of California?

A: As a general matter across the nation, there is no universal answer. It all depends on the entity requesting the notarized signature. Some entities or offices may accept an overseas notarization, and some may not. Or in some cases, it could be within the individual discretion of a clerk. The best way to find out would be to simply email your question to the county office; you have nothing to lose. Good luck
