Carpentersville, IL asked in Criminal Law for Illinois

Q: yes so i was working at Target, and i stole $1k worth of promotional gift cards.

yes so i was working at Target, and i stole $1k worth of promotional gift cards. I was caught, and arrested. I was released the following day on a 10,000 I-Bond. I showed up to court a couple weeks later to find out that I was indicted. So i now have a court date this upcoming Friday. The last thing I want to do is spend time in jail. I want to do everything in my power to avoid that, as I have a wife and child, and am enrolled in full time school in college. I don't have any priors. All i have is some speeding tickets, and thats it. What are my odds I go to jail with just a public defender? I don't have that much money to pay a lawyer, but i will find a way if i must to avoid jail

A: You need to hire an attorney right away. The sooner you hire an attorney, the better. The longer you wait, the worse things will be and harder for an attorney to fix.
