Q: Can I require my landlord to renew my lease since they did not give me notice of nonrenewable within the 60 days?

I live in housing that gets government funding. Per our lease agreement, The landlord is required to give 60 days notice if they're not renewing a lease, which they didn't do. They had to notify me by 1/31/20 (lease ends 3/31/20) but they did not mail notice until February 4, 2020 (I received it 2/7/20) & then added a month to my lease giving me April as month to month. They basically changed the terms of the lease/legal contract without consulting me. I wouldn't have agreed to the one month month to month extension. I would decline & insist on receiving a new one year lease since they did not give me proper 60 days notice of nonrenewal for my lease which really ends on 3/31/20. I feel my rights are violated. Were my rights violated? Do I have to accept this late notice of nonrenewal of my lease and one month month to month extension? They added April onto the lease so they can claim they gave 60 days notice, is this a violation of our legal contract/lease? Thank you.

A: Contact the federal or state funding agency and present this situation to them. There may be some other contingency term in the landlords contract with the agency that resolves this dispute.
