Grand Rapids, MI asked in Federal Crimes and Traffic Tickets for Michigan

Q: My son got pulled over and ticketed for no insurance. Is he going to get jail time ?

My son bought a truck in Wisconsin. He was under the impression from the man that it'd b fine 2 drive the truck home 2 Michigan from Wisconsin.& then insure & register it. Well he got pulled over on the way home. He got a ticket 4 no registrarion & no insurance. They marked the registration as a misdemeanor & the insurance as a civil infraction on the ticket. He got the truck home & parked it in the yard & tore it apart as it needed a lot of work. So he hasn't insured or registered it yet because it's in pieces @ the moment in the yard as its got a lot of problems that hopefully he can fix as he bought the truck to gift it 2 his little brother. Well he has a court date set , we cannot afford 2 hire an attorney. What's worrying us is that we r afraid of jail. are the chances that he is going 2 get jail time? He just got a new job & cant afford 2 lose it. Do u think they're going 2 put him in jail over this? Or will he get fines.

A: I doubt that he is going to get jail time. He needs to fully explain the circumstances of the incident when he sees the prosecutor and the judge. He should have a dated receipt for buying the truck, to show he had just bought the vehicle. He should have photos of it in its disassembled condition, to explain why he hasn't gotten it registered and insured yet. Sincerely, Frank B. Ford
