Mc Dowell, KY asked in Animal / Dog Law for Kentucky

Q: Okay, so when me and my ex was together, he bought a dog for us. We split and I got the dog. He’s been with me 9 months

My ex has had nothing to do with him but maybe 2 weeks out of the 9 months. Now my ex says he can take him just because he paid for him but I’ve been the one buying the dog food, paying vet bills, and just taking care of him in general so can my ex take him all because he bought him almost 2 years ago now

A: If he wasn’t awarded the dog in the divorce action, he doesn’t get the dog. End of story. You’ve had custody for two years and paid for everything. If he wanted the dog, he should have said so before the divorce. He’s out of luck unless you surrender the dog, regardless of what he says now.
