A: A great place to start is to call your corporate attorney. Most of my referrals here in North Carolina come from corporate attorneys that work with high tech startups.

Another good place is to check in with the state's Small Business Development Center as they know which patent attorneys like working with young companies.

I hope that this helps.

A: The best way of finding a patent attorney, any patent attorney, is to ask for a referral from an attorney that you already have a relationship with. Your attorney will likely be able to recommend an attorney who is a good match. However, your attorney may not really know a patent attorney who is a good fit for you, so don't be surprised if you need to go through a series of referrals.

Because patent law is federal law and not a state law, you do not need a local patent attorney. What is important is that you have a good fit (appropriate technology, understanding of your business, experience, etc.) for you, and the location is not really all that important.
