Russellville, KY asked in Criminal Law for Kentucky

Q: If the police do not have probable cause, are they legally able to search with a K9?

I was told I was being pulled over because my license was expired (who ever looks at that anyway? HA) and my passenger did not have a seatbelt on. The cop took my license and insurance and went to her car. The next thing I know a K9 officer is hollering to get our hands on the dash and said the dog hit on my car. Nothing was found in my car which is no surprise to me. I do not have a record and have only been arrested once for a DUI (8 years ago). There were no drugs in sight, no smell or evidence of drugs, and I was not acting suspiciously. What gave them probable cause to search my car? It was quite embarassing.

A: No. No probable cause limits their ability to search anything.
