Asked in Domestic Violence and Juvenile Law for Georgia

Q: What to do if you are in an abusive home, but only have pictures of the aftermath?

I live in an abusive home. My guardian physically abuses my little brother, and mentally/emotionally abuses me. I only have pictures of what shes done to my little brother, who has ODD and autism. I have witnesses of what shes done to me, but that's it. I'm seventeen, my little brother is nine. I don't want my guardian to go to jail, I just want her to get help. She's ill, in many ways. I suspect childhood abuse has happened to her, and I understand the trauma and ways it makes you think its your normal. Shes okay some days, and worse on others. I want out this abusive home, and I want my brother to be in a better home. My little brother doesn't see the need to get out, because hes nine. I just want to get out, I could get out (somehow- she threatens to throw me out) and wait for myself to turn 18 to get my little brother out- but I don't think that would be healthy for him. I'm not sure what to do, any advice?

A: Your circumstances are unfortunate. Child abuse is a serious and emergency situation. The best and most immediate response is to contact local authorities/police or contact Child Protective Services (CPS). I understand your empathy towards your guardian, however intervention is needed before this escalates to serious injury or death.

You are 17 years old and in the state of Georgia you are still a minor. You cannot make the decision to move/leave until you reach the age of 18. And, once you are old enough to leave, you must consider the environment your younger sibling will be left in.

The authorities should be contacted immediately.

We wish you well.
