A: The court filing fee is about $300 to 400. If an investigation is required to determine parenting issues, then several hundred more. Legal fees for an attorney could be from a thousand, to many thousand, depending on what happens. The process takes at least a few months, and can take up to a year or more if there are disputes. And the virus has slowed down the process in many court. Check the court web site for the forms to file and typical questions and answers about the process. Some courts and local law schools have legal clinics to assist those without an attorney. Call the court and ask, or use the Find a Lawyer tab to call some attorneys to find one who might work within your budget.
