A: To get an ITIN one needs to fill out IRS Form w-7. The form can be found at the IRS website (irs.gov) An attorney may not be needed since this is mostly a matter of gathering your key documents (e.g., passport, birth certificate) and bringing or sending them to the IRS.

That form requires certain substantiating documents. The documents and W-7 form are either mailed to the IRS, delivered to an IRS walk-in office or delivered to someone called an authorized "Acceptance Agent."

The IRS requires original documents, or certified copies, to establish identity and foreign status. An embassy or consulate may be able to help with certifying copies.

While not legal advice, I hope that this helps.
