A: An attorney handling on personal injury case on a contingent fee basis, has a statutory lien for their services or possibly based upon the reasonable value of their services a/ka/a "quantum meruit". There is also case law that creates different classifications of prior attorney compensation, which deals with what the attorney did to move the case forward. KInd of complicated.
