Arlington, TX asked in Criminal Law for Texas

Q: Letter from attorney saying i have a fine. Looked up the fine and its arrest warrant for theft in 2016 that I didn't do

The warrant is for theft under $100 from 2016. I have never stolen anything. The lady at the courthouse said the ticket was mailed to my old address. I never changed the address on my DL because I thought I was supposed to wait until my license expired to change the address. She also said someone filed a complaint that I stole a sign and then they sent me a ticket which has gone unpaid since 2016 because I never knew about it until this random lawyer sent me a letter. How can someone just file a complaint and I'm guilty just like that? No officer ever came to ask me about this or I never got called about it. I HAVE NEVER STOLEN ANYTHING. I'm supposed to go to a pre trial hearing but I don't even know what that is. Thanks for your help

A: It sounds like the Court may have considered you as having Failed to Appear. If that is the case, there is probably a warrant out for your arrest. You really should hire a lawyer to defend yourself.

A: Contact an attorney about posting a bond and setting this case for trial. Good luck

A: Did you lose your ID sometime in that time frame? Do you have a sibling or cousin who might have used your identity?

It sounds like you received a letter from a debt collecting law firm. What you need now is a criminal defense attorney, and ideally someone with an office in the same town where the charges were filed.
