Small Claims cases are filed in the Justice of the Peace court, for the area where the defendant lives, or where the contract was performed. The jurisdictional limit is now $20,000. The cost will depend on the kind of case and how much the defendant wants to fight about it. If either side is unhappy with the result in the JP court, they can appeal to the County Court, and try the case again, so the legal cost can be difficult to predict.
