Dallas, TX asked in Animal / Dog Law for Texas

Q: How to adopt a dog?

My boyfriend has had his dog for 6 or 7 years and got her through humane society but under his friends name. He no longer has contact with that friend and doesn’t have any papers for the dog. He wants to get papers for her.

A: Unless the dog is a purebred, there aren't actually any "papers," and probably nothing showing ownership.

If he takes the dog to a vet, he can get it chipped, and if he registers his name and contact information to the chip, that's evidence of ownership, and he can get it vaccinated for rabies, and there will be a vaccination receipt and tags.
