Q: I was in a car accident as a kid but never received the settlement. How can I find record of the terms in NYS ?
I’m 46 now but was told when I was 10 yrs old this happened. I know the city and county but no record of anything in my name .
A:
This might be difficult with the passage of so much time. It could be easy if you could locate the attorney who represented you. But you might not be posting this if you had that information. If you can't do that, it could involve more work. Given the timeline you present, it looks like the accident occurred about 36 years ago. Eight years later (about 28 years ago), an infant comp hearing could have been held to get court approval for your award. If you remember where the accident took place, you could have a decent shot at narrowing down the venue (the county in which the court that heard your case sat). You could check with their clerks to see if they have records of an infant comp order. Good luck

A: If you know the county where the settlement happened, and more or less the year, call the county clerk and explain the problem. Since you were a child, the case could not be settled without a court order. There must be a record in the count clerk’s office.
