Cincinnati, OH asked in Landlord - Tenant for Ohio

Q: Will a landlord give money back that you paid a full year to but haven't moved in yet?

If someone put a whole years rent payment on a house they want to rent, and something comes up to where they can't live in the house because something came up, will they be able to get the money back? They just got the keys not even a week ago and haven't even moved anything in yet.

A: If a written lease was fully signed, and it is a contract for the full year that they paid, then they would have to negotiate with landlord. If tenants choose not to move in and live there, that is their choice. Landlord does not have to return their rent payment. But tenants can use the Find a Lawyer tab to retain a local real estate attorney to review the lease and advise them.
