Q: Am I responsible for the water and sewer?
I moved in July 15 2020. My ll told me I was responsible for water. I asked him who do I pay & he told me to call the twp & they would tell me how much I owe. When I called they told me there was an unpaid balance prior to when I moved in. I told my ll immediately & he said he didn’t want that to happen again & that he will oversee the bill & lmk my balance quarterly. He paid the old balance & told me my 1st qtr bill was $126 which I paid to the township directly in Oct of last year. I haven’t heard anything else & honestly I forgot & apparently so did he. He is selling house & settlement is today at 4 PM & his real estate agent brought to his attention a $956 balance for water & sewer. He’s demanding I pay this before 4pm. I asked for a breakdown of bill & I see there’s a 159 per qtr sewer fee. He only had me pay water for my 1st qtr, what am I responsible for? My lease states I am resp for utilities no specifics, why didn’t he charge me sewer in oct 2020 when he told me my water Bal?
A: You are only responsible to pay for those items which are listed in the lease agreement. I would suggest you call the municipality and request a copy of the bills when you became responsible for the water bill. Check your records to see how much you previously paid towards your share. If there is an outstanding balance offer to pay that amount and no more.
