Castle Rock, CO asked in Animal / Dog Law for Colorado

Q: Do I have any rights even though I relinquished them?

Unexpected death in immediate family out of state, nobody was willing/able to watch my dog while I was gone for the service. I could not board him on such short notice due to the boarding facility never having boarded my dog before. Explained situation to vet and they found a rescue for my dog to go to so he wouldn't be alone while I was gone. This was on a Friday. I get back the following Wednesday and find out that someone picked up my dog on Saturday from the rescue and decided to keep him. Can I get my dog back? I signed the relinquishment paper but I was in a state of distress from not knowing what to do with my dog while gone and losing a family member. Please help.

A: Probably not. A competent animal attorney would need to review the documents you signed and obtain more factual information about the situation to see if you have any valid defense.

Have you tried contacting the rescue? Even if you have to pay to adopt him back you should try because boarding would not have been free.
