Saint Petersburg, FL asked in Family Law for Florida

Q: What can we do about a 40 year marriage that apparently was never legally recorded?

We were married on a whim in Vegas by a man we met that invited us to a party, Lots of drinking. He was supposed to be a person who could legally do it. If I remember correctly he gave us paperwork in script that I think was supposed to act as a temporary license while he filed the rest with a county in Las Vegas. We have no idea 40 years later and two kids where it is now and really didn`t care until now planning to move to Mexico. Mexico wants a copy of our marriage license. What can we do please? My wife has had my last name for 40 years now. There is no record in Vegas of our marriage.

A: It sounds like the most efficient thing to do would be to apply for a marriage license and properly complete the marriage. All regularly ordained ministers of the gospel or elders in communion with some church, or other ordained clergy, and all judicial officers, including retired judicial officers, clerks of the circuit courts, and notaries public of this state may solemnize the rights of matrimonial contract, under the regulations prescribed by law.
