A: Hello,

To clarify, are you asking about the punishment for a member of the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Merchant Marine, or someone else? Are the insulting words coming from a service member or a private citizen? And are the words profane and/or false, or something else? Thank you.

A: It could depend on who runs the vessel and their standard operating procedures. In terms of insults, seamanship skills are sometimes criticized - but foul language is deemed bad form across the board. The greater emphasis and concern is in keeping idle chatter off monitored channels and not tying them up. Good luck
