Cedar Springs, MI asked in Employment Law and Employment Discrimination for Michigan

Q: What are the terminating businesses' limitations as far as taking fired employees off campus?

When I was put on leave pending termination, an off duty campus police officer was waiting to drive me home. I didn't have a driver's license due to seizures. The VP who fired me said they set up a ride home due to my condition. I said I'd rather my wife, who worked a mile away, come pick me up. I was told no, I would be driven home. I said I would like to be dropped off at my wife's office. Again told no, I would be driven home. I asked the PO, as we arrived at the car, if I should sit in the front or the back.. I got in an unmarked campus police vehicle and was driven home, going by my wife's work. I asked the PO if he could drop me off there, and he said he was told to drive me home. My home was 17 miles away. I feel this treatment was far past the university's rights and that I was falsely imprisoned, basically.

A: If your wife worked on campus, then I think the university had a right to escort you off campus and not to your wife's office. Whether you were falsely imprisoned is a bit more complex of an issue. I suppose you could have said you want to be dropped off across the street from university property...once terminated, you could become a trespasser on university grounds.
