Q: If I win a case for 45,000 and my lawyer gets a third of it, how much is he actually getting?
A: The simplest answer is $15,000, one-third of $45,000. But it is seldom this simple, and no one could say exactly how the figure is computed without seeing your file. There could be deductions for out-of-pocket disbursements. These could include court costs, pre-trial expenses such as deposition fees (stenographer), obtaining medical records from a records management company, expert testimony fees, narrative preparation fees, etc. Depending on the case, there could be liens that need to be satisfied. These can arise from repayment to a workers' comp carrier, or public health insurer, or other lienholders. But these are only generalities. Only your lawyer could explain the breakdown of figures. Good luck
