A: A local attorney could offer state-specific guidance, but your question remains open for three weeks. I'm sorry for the ordeal your wife experienced. It would be difficult for an attorney to advise meaningfully without seeing the terms of the claim/lien asserted here. But in general, medical liens from public health agencies often attach to the award in a lawsuit by operation of law or by agreement. Still, the issue you raise is worth looking into, given the passage of so much time. If an attorney represented your wife in the matter, check with them. Otherwise, you could check with an attorney experienced in health care claims/liens. Good luck
